Gemology involves studying the physical and optical gemstone properties. As one graduates into gem identification, it is these physical and optical properties that distinguish one species from another. A number of instruments can be used to distinguish or measure these properties such as precision scales, dial calipers, dichroscopes, color filters, refractometers, optical glass binocular magnifiers, pen lights, tweezers, loupes and microscopes.
